Emborio:

Villa Vasso and Lisoulla studio are situated in the picturesque fishing village of Emborio. The tavernas, shops, post office and cafes are arranged around the harbour and there are several swimming pool style steps so you can have a swim without walking to the beach.  The water is crystal clear and full of fish.

Dining:

There are 5 café-bars and 7 tavernas along the harbour in Emborio and at Pondamos and Ftenayia, both beaches have tavernas overlooking the sea.  The food is generally home cooked and of excellent quality. If you like seafood try the famous Halki shrimps - small shrimps with a light flour coating.  Crispy and delicious with some of Dimitri's bread and lemon juice.

There are several village grocery stores nearby if you fancy eating at home.  Freshly made bread and pastries are available daily from Dimitri's Bakery (a 1 minute walk from your front door)

The Beaches:

There are three main beaches within easy walking distance of the accommodation, and many others that can only be reached by boat (you can hire the water taxi from the harbour to take you to these - remember to take food and drink with you as there are no facilities at the more remote beaches).

Walking:

There are many scenic walks on your doorstep.  Whether you fancy a 5 minute stroll to a beach for a swim followed by lunch at a nearby taverna, or a more ambitious expedition to the crusader castle or the monastery of St John at the other end of the island - all are readily available.

A brief history:

Halki is a small, tranquil island in the Dodecanese in the very south of the Aegean sea. The island is south of Tilos and west of Rhodes.

Halki has been inhabited since antiquity and once had a thriving population of up to 4000 people (the remains of their houses can be clearly seen if you venture inland from the main village).  Halki used to produce copper, and the name of the island probably derives from the Greek word ‘halkos’ which means copper.

Nowadays, the population live at one end of the island in a small village arranged neatly around a natural harbour.  This is called ‘Emborio’, and is where Villa Vasso and Lisoulla studio are situated.

Emborio was built in the 19th Century largely from the proceeds of sponge fishing which thrived in Halki until a disease nearly wiped out the sponges in the early 20th century causing an exodus of the population.
